Cook4Life: Community Cookery Club Training

Audience / For: Community staff, volunteer leaders, education setting staff working with parents/carers and families in Kensington and Chelsea, and Westminster.

Time:  9:00am to 4:30pm

Venue:  Canalside Activity Centre, Canal Close, Ladbroke Grove, London. W10 5AY

Training Overview:

The Change4Life service is available in Kensington and Chelsea, and Westminster to support children, young people, and families most at risk of poor health outcomes to eat well and keep active.

This training session aims to support staff working with families and parents of children and young people aged 2 years and older, working in a community or education setting, to have confidence in facilitating healthy cookery workshops and cookery clubs. Please read the important notes section below before booking this training.

Impact on your Knowledge, Skills and Confidence:

  • Understand how to plan and structure a safe and fun cookery session
  • Be aware of food hygiene, food safety and personal hygiene in relation to cooking
  • Identify recipes that are accessible, affordable and support a nutritionally balanced diet
  • Gain experience in adapting recipes, including popular cultural dishes, to improve balance, meet dietary needs and preferences, and support families to eat well on a budget
  • Introduce you to promoting evidence-based healthy eating messages, and facilitate discussion during sessions

Additional information for education setting:

This training is suitable for education settings who may wish to run extra-curricular cookery sessions and clubs with children, parents or families outside of the usual school hours. The content of this training is not linked to the curriculum, however, sessions support ensuring foods prepared support healthy eating principles as well as support families to eat well on a budget. Taking this training forward into your setting will support any applications for local recognition awards, such as Healthy Schools London.

Important notes:

Completion of the Change4Life Healthy Eating and Nutrition training is required before this session, which can be booked here if required.

In addition:

  • You should have some cooking skills, such as good knife skills and use of electrical equipment, confidence following recipes, and experience working with children and adults;
  • Training around food safety and hygiene, and allergies is required pre or post training;
  • First Aid training is recommended and strongly advised to support best practice; and
  • Pre-reading is recommended where Change4Life Healthy Eating and Nutrition training is older than 6 months.
