Training Overview:

Since the introduction of statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education in September 2020, much of the focus of PSHE Education has been on addressing this mandatory content. Staff, students and parents however are increasingly aware of the growing need for quality ‘Economic’ Education to help equip young people with essential life skills in relation to economic wellbeing, money management and financial capability.

In the recent ‘Curriculum and Assessment Review’ Interim Report (March 2025), young people and their parents consistently fed back that they want more focus on the applied knowledge and skills that will equip them for later life and work, such as financial education and careers knowledge. Their polling showed that 34% of key stage 4 learners and 43% of their parents would have liked more focus on finance and budgeting, and 32% of key stage 4 learners and 36% of their parents would have liked more time on employment and interview skills (figure 7). The National Parent Survey data (2024) further confirms these trends, with nearly half of parents thinking that too little time is spent on skills related to financial management (48%); and around a third would like more attention to life skills (32%); and preparation for the job market (32%).

This session will provide participants with opportunities to explore financial wellbeing and money management, how our emotions are linked to money, financial risks including increased exposure to online financial risks, and how making financial decisions including careers and employment is a vital part of preparing children and young people for adult life.

This session aims to build your knowledge, skills and confidence in delivering Economic Education through your PSHE curriculum to meets the need of your students.

Impact on your Knowledge, Skills and Confidence:

  • To explore what we mean by Economic Education and Financial Capability
  • To review the secondary curriculum and consider relevant planning frameworks to support the delivery of Economic Education
  • To consider issues relating to the sensitive, diverse and inclusive delivery of Economic Education
  • To share a range of practical resources to support your delivery of Economic Education
